HALF A WORLD AWAY
(by Bob Carty and David Graham)

Pictures came today, half a world away. Ethiopia, Images of dying skin and bone
The bellies and the flies, eyes too dry to cry, Ethiopia,
Will we find compassion turned to stone?
Feel it touch the soul, a mother’s empty bowl. Half a world away
Today an empty bowl, tonight another soul
Worlds away. Half a world away

Choose who will be fed, who is left for dead, choose which mouth.
How dare we know what only god should know?
Even in the thirst, politics come first, north and south
Warnings buried by the evening news
Who can say a grace, when hunger haunts a face, Half a world away?
Who can say a prayer, with hunger in the air?
Worlds away. Half a world away

Ethiopia, Mali and Sudan, Bangladesh
Contradictions still born on TV
And though we have the means to feed humanity, heal the flesh
Heartstrings wait ‘till plucked by a child’s eyes
And though there’s lasting need,
there’s only sympathy half a world away
When will we have the heart,
to go to where it starts?
Who can say a grace, when hunger haunts a face,
half a world away?
Worlds away. Half a world away

Paula Kriwoy (lead vocal), Bob (lead and rhythm guitars, backing vocals), James (backing vocals, electric guitar, bass, accordion, Wurlitzer), Rob (percussion)
